The Demo Gauntlet: Your 20-Trade Challenge
Everything you've learned, on the line — except money. A structured 20-trade demo challenge with strict rules, a full journal requirement, and a scorecard that grades discipline over profit. This is your beginner final exam.
📘 Where knowledge meets the click
Seventeen modules of theory are behind you. Now comes the discovery every trader makes: knowing and doing are different sports. You know the sizing formula — but will you run it with a live chart moving? You know revenge trading kills — but what happens inside you after two straight stops?
The Demo Gauntlet answers those questions safely. Twenty trades on a demo account, under strict rules, every one journaled. Your grade has almost nothing to do with profit — and everything to do with whether you can execute a plan when it counts.
Demo profits are pleasant fiction; demo discipline is real. The habits you build here transfer to live trading. The P&L does not.
🎯 The mission
Complete 20 trades over at least four weeks (rushing is an automatic fail — patience is one of the graded skills). You will use one written strategy, fixed risk, and a complete journal entry for every single trade. Then you will review the sample and grade yourself with the scorecard below.
📜 The rules of the gauntlet
1. One strategy, written first. Use the eight-component template from the strategy lesson (the London Pullback example is a fine starting point). The stranger test applies: rules on paper before trade one. Mid-challenge rule changes are recorded as violations.
2. Demo account sized like your real future. If you would fund $1,000, demo $1,000. Practising on a fantasy $100,000 teaches fantasy sizing.
3. Fixed 1% risk, formula-sized, every trade. Stop distance from structure, size from the math. No exceptions, no "obvious winner" upgrades.
4. Full ticket on entry. Entry, stop-loss and take-profit placed together. Widening a stop mid-trade = the gravest violation on the sheet.
5. Circuit breakers armed. Two losses in a day = done for the day. Down 6% for the week = done for the week. Breaker violations are exactly what this challenge exists to catch — better here than with rent money.
6. Every trade journaled, all three layers. Facts, context (screenshot included), human — the emotion tag and one honest sentence. An unjournaled trade counts as a violation even if it won.
7. Skipped setups count. Log valid setups you failed to take, with the reason. Hesitation data is performance data — remember the pendulum saboteur.
🗂️ Weekly rhythm
Daily: the 15-minute pre-market routine (calendar, mood, structure if-thens, self-check). Trades only when your strategy's conditions appear — zero-trade days are successful days if no setup existed.
Weekly: the 30-minute review — sort by rule-compliance, hunt one pattern, grade the process, write one sentence: what is next week's single point of focus?
🏁 The scorecard
After trade 20, score four categories from your journal — evidence, not memory:
| Category | What the journal must show | Pass bar |
|---|---|---|
| Discipline | Rule-compliance rate across all trades | ≥ 90% (18 of 20 clean) |
| Risk control | Every trade sized by formula at 1%; breakers respected | Zero sizing violations |
| Platform competence | Correct order types; no fat-finger errors; full tickets | Zero mechanical errors after week one |
| Consistency | Routine ran daily; journal complete; weekly reviews written | No missing entries |
Notice what is absent: profit. A losing 20-trade sample with 95% compliance is a pass with honours — twenty trades is noise, as the expectancy lesson proved, but 95% discipline is signal. A profitable sample riddled with violations is a fail wearing a costume: the market paid you to practise habits that will bankrupt you later.
🔧 Setting up
Open a demo account with the broker you shortlisted in the broker lesson, on MT4 or MT5. Then connect it to your GaphyToro journal — demo accounts connect exactly like live ones, fills log themselves, and screenshots capture automatically, leaving you only the honest layers. Set up your free account before trade one, not trade eleven: the challenge's value is the record.
😬 What you will actually feel
Around trade 5: boredom — the strategy will refuse to signal for days, and you will itch to invent setups. Around the first losing streak: the revenge whisper. After a lucky win: the size whisper. All of this is the curriculum. The gauntlet is not testing whether markets are kind; it is introducing you to your own saboteurs in a room where they cannot hurt you. Log every whisper in the emotion column — that column is the treasure this challenge exists to mine.
✅ Key takeaways
20 trades, 4+ weeks, one written strategy, 1% formula-sized risk, full tickets, everything journaled.
Graded on discipline, risk control, competence and consistency — never on profit.
A disciplined losing sample passes with honours; a sloppy winning one fails.
Zero-trade days are wins when no setup existed; skipped valid setups are data.
The saboteurs will visit — meeting them safely is the entire point.
